Yantra (from Sanskrit yantra, “instrument, device or machine”) is the exonym name of Kena (from the root ken, “machine”, in ancient Theknusian). For the distinction between exonyms and endonyms, see the entry Exonyms and Endonyms.
Yantra rises at the foot of Mount Uruk and is considered the technological capital of Solaria. Its importance does not derive from a coastal commercial position, but from its relationship with the mountain, with water, with mineral resources, and with the inland routes connecting the northern territories of Theknus to the rest of the country.
Geography
Yantra occupies a vast terraced basin at the foot of Mount Uruk. The city is not built on a uniform plain, but on a sequence of gentle rises, natural terraces, and artificial platforms that descend progressively from the mountain toward the south and southeast.
The northern part is the highest and rockiest. Here the terrain still preserves the character of the mountain: stone walls, consolidated slopes, conduits, basins, and energy structures set into the landscape. Moving toward the center, the relief softens until it forms a broad urban terrace, stable and flat enough to host the Forum of the Technical Arts. Further south, the city opens into inhabited districts, gardens, markets, and community areas, where the industrial presence becomes less compact and more integrated into daily life.
This altitudinal arrangement played a decisive role in the city’s development: Yantra was not born as a purely defensive settlement, nor as a mercantile city, but as a place of transformation: the water descending from Mount Uruk, stone, metal, wind, and slope favored from the very beginning the construction of workshops, mills, water wheels, laboratories, and accumulation plants.
The Rasha River
The city is crossed by the Rasha, a mountain watercourse that rises from the slopes of Mount Uruk and descends through Yantra with an oblique course, from northwest to southeast.
The name Rasha derives from the ancient root rash, which indicates the act of flowing with force, of cutting into and leaving a mark on matter. The root does not simply designate flowing water, but a force that passes through something and modifies it: the water that carves stone, the movement that generates work, the energy that passes through a system and transforms it.
For this reason the Rasha holds very strong symbolic value in Yantrian culture. It is not a contemplative or ornamental river, but a technical, historical, and almost foundational presence. The first workshops arose along its banks, exploiting the current to power wheels, hammers, saws, and lifting systems. Later the natural course was progressively regulated through locks, side canals, settling basins, and energy conduits.
In its northern stretch the Rasha still retains the appearance of a swift, cold torrent. In the urban center it is disciplined by monumental works of hydraulic engineering. In the production district its course is partly channeled and flanked by technical infrastructure. To the south, before leaving the city, the river crosses green areas and filtration systems, where the water is slowed and returned to the land.
Urban structure
Yantra develops according to a concentric structure, organized around the Forum of the Technical Arts, a vast public area dedicated to experimentation, machine exhibitions, public demonstrations, and the great civic celebrations tied to human ingenuity.
From the Forum branch out the main urban arteries, which divide the city into four large functional sectors. The layout is not rigidly geometric as it would be in a city designed from scratch, because the terrain, the river, and the slopes of Mount Uruk have imposed continuous adaptations. Nevertheless, seen from above, Yantra retains the image of a great mechanism: a central core, main axes, connecting rings, and districts arranged as complementary parts of an urban machine.
The overall appearance of the layout recalls that of a gear. The Forum of the Technical Arts constitutes the central pivot, while the production, energy, residential, and research areas are arranged like the internal sections of a toothed wheel. This form is not only functional but also symbolic: Yantra represents the transformation of energy into work and of work into collective prosperity.
Research District
West of the Forum lies the Research District, located on a sector slightly elevated with respect to the city center. Its higher, more ventilated position makes it one of the quietest quarters of Yantra, separated from the continuous noise of the workshops and the heavy traffic of the logistics ring.
Here are located technical universities, laboratories, archives, engineering academies, computation centers, and institutes dedicated to the study of materials, energy, and complex machines. The district is characterized by low, solid buildings, inner courtyards, observation towers, technical libraries, and geometric gardens also used as study spaces.
The Research District is not separate from the productive city, but constantly engages with it. Many prototypes designed in the western laboratories are tested in the Forum of the Technical Arts and subsequently transferred to the eastern workshops. This relationship between theory, trial, and production is one of the most characteristic traits of Yantrian culture.
Production District
East of the Forum extends the Production District, the largest and most operational part of the city. Here are concentrated workshops, factories, transformation plants, assembly departments, technical warehouses, and permanent yards for building the infrastructure used throughout the rest of Solaria.
The eastern terrain is lower and more regular than the northern and western sectors, a feature that has favored the construction of large production buildings, wide roads, and heavy transport systems. The Rasha, by now partly channeled, crosses or skirts various areas of the district, feeding cooling systems, conduits, and secondary plants.
The Production District is not described as a degraded periphery, but as a noble part of the city. In Yantra technical labor is not hidden: it is visible, recognized, and integrated into the public representation of the city. The main workshops often have monumental façades, ceremonial entrances, and spaces open to visitors during civic celebrations.
Residential District
South of the Forum develop the residential quarters, laid out on milder, more open terraces. This part of the city is crossed by narrower streets, markets, schools, gardens, public baths, communal courtyards, and spaces dedicated to daily life.
Although Yantra is a strongly industrial city, the southern sector preserves numerous green areas. The local culture does not rigidly oppose machine and nature: it prefers to think of technique as a way to order, protect, and make the territory habitable. For this reason the inhabited quarters are not merely dormitories for workers and engineers, but places where communal life retains its own autonomy from production.
The secondary canals derived from the Rasha cross some residential zones, where the water is slowed and made visible through small bridges, basins, linear gardens, and irrigation systems. In this part of the city, the noise of the workshops gives way to a more domestic dimension, even though the presence of the machine remains constant in architectural details, urban furnishings, and monuments.
Energy District
To the north and northeast lies the Energy District, the sector closest to the slopes of Mount Uruk. Here are concentrated the accumulation, distribution, and research plants for energy sources, together with basins, pressure towers, conduits, maintenance workshops, and structures carved into or leaning against the rock.
The elevated position allows exploitation of the natural slope, the wind, the flow of the Rasha, and proximity to mountain resources. The district does not have the appearance of a simple industrial zone, but of a great inhabited infrastructure: stone, metal, water, and light intertwine in a technical landscape that strongly marks the northern image of the city.
On the eastern edge of this sector stands the Eastern Gate, dominated by the famous Clock Tower, one of the most recognizable monumental structures of Yantra.
Eastern Gate and Clock Tower
The Eastern Gate is one of the main entrances to the city and constitutes the symbolic threshold of Yantra. Those arriving from the east encounter the Clock Tower even before reaching the Forum of the Technical Arts.
The tower’s placement at the gate, rather than at the center of the city, is significant. The Clock does not represent the administrative heart of Yantra, but its declaration of identity. It welcomes those entering the city by displaying the relationship between technique, time, and natural cycles. The machine is not presented as pure power, but as an instrument of measurement, harmony, and orientation.
The Clock Tower measures the passing of hours, seasons, and the main civic cycles. Its presence links the rhythm of the workshops, the public calendar, and the observation of the sky, transforming the eastern entrance into one of the most solemn places in the city.
Forum of the Technical Arts
The Forum of the Technical Arts is the civic and symbolic center of Yantra. It is a large public area, part square, part demonstration space, part ceremonial site.
Here new machines are presented, inventors celebrated, prototypes tested, temporary exhibitions set up, and the main festivals tied to the culture of ingenuity held. The Forum is therefore not simply an urban center, but the point where the city shows itself its own vocation.
Its broad, regular shape contrasts with the irregularity of the surrounding landscape. This difference is intentional: the Forum represents the ordered space created by collective intelligence within a complex, mountainous territory crossed by natural forces.
Locks of the Rasha
The Locks of the Rasha constitute one of the city’s main points of interest. They are found in the stretch where the torrent, descending from Mount Uruk, enters the urban heart and is regulated before crossing the production quarters.
The system comprises sluice gates, basins, side canals, service bridges, and ancient hydraulic mechanisms, some still functioning and others preserved as historical testimony. The locks have not only a practical function, but also symbolic value: they show the moment when the natural force of water is received, measured, and transformed into work.
For many inhabitants of Yantra, the Locks of the Rasha represent the character of the city better than any monument. Water is neither venerated as an untouchable force nor blindly exploited as a mute resource; it is guided into a system of relationships, becoming part of the collective work.
Bridge of the Wheels
The Bridge of the Wheels crosses the Rasha near the Forum of the Technical Arts. The name derives from the ancient water wheels that once stood in this area and that, according to tradition, powered the city’s first permanent workshops.
Over the centuries the bridge has been rebuilt several times, but it has always retained a representative function. Its decorations recall gears, wheels, levers, and motion transmission systems. Some mechanical elements, though no longer necessary to the city’s functioning, are still activated during public celebrations.
The Bridge of the Wheels is one of the places where the technical memory of Yantra becomes most visible. Crossing it means ideally passing from the city of water and mountain to the city of the machine and invention.
Archive of the Machines
In the Research District stands the Archive of the Machines, a great institution dedicated to preserving technical designs, experimental models, failed prototypes, calculation instruments, and historical testimonies of Theknusian engineering.
The Archive does not preserve only what has worked. An important part of its collections is dedicated to errors, incomplete attempts, and machines that remained at the stage of hypothesis. This reflects an important principle of Yantrian culture: technical failure is not considered a shame, but a form of deposited knowledge.
For this reason the Archive of the Machines is frequented not only by scholars and engineers, but also by artisans, students, designers, and apprentices. It is one of the places where Yantra preserves its long memory.
Ancient Workshops
In the eastern sector, within the Production District, stand the Ancient Workshops. They are the oldest core of the industrial city, arisen along the first canals derived from the Rasha.
Some workshops are still active, others have been transformed into public spaces, technical schools, museums of labor, or ceremonial sites. Their presence prevents Yantra from appearing as a merely modern and abstract city: the Ancient Workshops recall that the technological capital of Solaria developed slowly, through generations of artisans, builders, apprentices, and researchers.
The stratification between ancient structures and recent installations is one of the most recognizable aspects of the eastern urban landscape.
High Basins
The High Basins are located in the northern part of the city, at the foot of Mount Uruk. They are large collection and regulation basins for water coming from the mountain, used for energy accumulation, the stabilization of the Rasha, and the feeding of various urban technical systems.
Visually they constitute one of Yantra’s most imposing landscapes: broad surfaces of water suspended between rock and metal, conduits descending toward the city, control towers, walkways, and retaining walls. During certain hours of the day, sunlight reflects on the basins, making visible from afar the relationship between mountain, water, and energy.
The High Basins are also a place of control and responsibility. On them depends in part the hydraulic balance of the city, and for this reason they are considered one of Yantra’s most delicate and respected infrastructures.
Gardens of the Silent Machines
In the southern sector, within the residential quarters, stand the Gardens of the Silent Machines. These are public parks in which old machinery, turbines, wheels, levers, looms, measuring instruments, and parts of large plants are preserved as urban sculptures.
These gardens display a particularly human trait of Yantrian culture. The machine is not simply used and then discarded; once it has completed its service, it can become memory, play, teaching, or ornament. Children grow up climbing among mechanical forms now harmless, elders recognize instruments belonging to their working lives, students learn by observing what remains of earlier technologies.
The Gardens of the Silent Machines allow the city to transform its industrial past into an affective landscape.
Logistics ring
Around the urban core runs a broad logistics ring reserved for the transport of goods, industrial connections, and the distribution of materials. This belt allows the center to remain relatively quiet and separate from heavy traffic.
The ring connects the Production District, the Energy District, the storage areas, the routes toward the quarries, and the inland roads leading to the other regions of Solaria. Since Yantra is not a port city, the terrestrial logistics system takes on fundamental importance: roads, ramps, warehouses, inland depots, and technical routes replace the function that elsewhere might be performed by the sea.
The separation between heavy traffic and city life is one of the reasons why Yantra, despite being an industrial city, is not perceived as entirely oppressive. The noise and movement of production are present, but channeled within recognizable routes.
Cultural significance
Yantra/Kena occupies a central place in the Theknusian imagination. While other cities of Solaria represent memory, ritual, agriculture, politics, or the relationship with the sky, Yantra represents the conscious transformation of matter.
The city does not celebrate the machine as pure force, nor technique as absolute dominion over nature. Its deepest symbolism arises from the encounter between different elements: Mount Uruk, the Rasha River, the inhabited terraces, the Forum of the Technical Arts, the Clock Tower, the Ancient Workshops, and the Gardens of the Silent Machines. All these places display the same idea: energy must be understood, directed, and restored to the community in the form of work, order, and prosperity.
For this reason Yantra is not only the technological capital of Solaria, but one of its most emblematic cities. It makes visible a fundamental question of Solarian civilization: how to transform the world without breaking the bond with the forces that generate it.
