Eighty-Four

In the symbolic world of Solaria, the same structure links the numerical system, the cycle of fifths, the cycle of life, and the measurement of time:

7 units × 12 internal parts = 84 total parts¹

In each of these domains, seven represents the cycle, twelve represents its internal articulation, and eighty-four unfolds the completed cycle.

Cycle of fifths

In equal temperament the cycle of fifths spans 84 semitones. Indeed, since a fifth corresponds to an interval of 7 semitones, proceeding through twelve fifths returns one to the starting note after progressively traversing all twelve pitches of the chromatic scale: 12 fifths × 7 semitones = 84 semitones.²

In Solarian symbolic language, the cycle of fifths can therefore be interpreted as a musical manifestation of the number 84. The twelve fifths traverse a complete cycle and, after eighty-four total semitones, lead back to the initial pitch class, transposed through seven octaves.

Cycle of life

The Solarians think of life as a great cycle made up of seven seasons, each lasting twelve years. The complete cycle thus reaches eighty-four years.

The seven seasons should not be understood as rigid boundaries, but as broad symbolic phases. Each twelve-year period represents a complete biographical unit, while the set of seven seasons represents the fully unfolded cycle.

The number 84 thus becomes the measure of the completed cycle of life. It does not necessarily indicate an absolute end, but the completion of a great form. Those who go beyond eighty-four years symbolically enter a further time, which can be interpreted as a second cycle, a time of resonance with what lies beyond completion.

From this perspective, living beyond eighty-four years does not mean leaving the system, but crossing into a new order. Just as in the numerical system seven does not appear as an autonomous digit but as a transition to 10, so in life the eighty-fourth year represents the passage from a completed cycle to a new form of existence.

Solarian clock

The Solarian clock applies the 7 × 12 principle to the measurement of time. Its logic does not coincide with that of the ordinary earthly clock, but it retains an analogous principle: time can be counted with numerical digits, while the units of measurement follow their own internal articulation.

In the ordinary system, for example, 60 seconds form 1 minute and 60 minutes form 1 hour. The numbers are written using the common decimal system, but the carry-over between temporal units does not occur at ten. It occurs at sixty.

The Solarian clock works in a similar way, but replaces the sexagesimal principle with the septimal-dozenal principle: a complete temporal unit can be composed of 84 parts, that is, of 7 groups of 12 internal parts.

For this reason, a Solarian hour corresponds to 84 minutes and a minute to 84 seconds.
